These are the first blocks I have made for the RSC15 as I only came across this challenge recently. Indigo was the colour chosen for August but any other dark colour would do for those without the necessary scraps. I decided that I wasn’t going to use plain white I would use polka dot instead.
The Road to California came first, completed with polka dot
I only had a little of this fabric and was contemplating buying more when I realised the whole point of the scrap challenge was to use up scraps not to make a scrappy quilt! There is a difference! Some buy fat eights to get the scrappy look but that isn’t the point here as that would only make more scraps. So I had a re-think and raided my scrap bag and baskets to find any low volume patterned/white fabric plus some plain old white after all. I love the indigo fabric which was a mere $7AU a metre from the stash builder basket in Spotlight, Brisbane.
The next block, the Bullseye block did have some sizing issues but all was sorted in the end (it comes up as 6 inches square not 6.5). This time a mix of plain white and I think it’s Sarah Fielke’s On The Pond but it’s out of print now
Last of all, and I think my favourite, is Mr Roosevelt’s Bowtie. A block I had never heard of before and for this I used the greatest variety of scraps, five fabrics in all.
Now I think I may have to ‘reverse sew’ the first block as I prefer the mix of background fabrics in the others. I will wait until I have made more blocks first though to see how they work together.
I have made quite a stack of ready cut squares to make the flying geese for the other colours so I hope to catch up soon

THe contrast is great in the blocks and congrats on finding so many suitable scraps. Glad you have joined us. By the way, my RSC15 post at place 12 works fine. The first one went crazy somehow. Angela is wonderful about encouraging all of us.

You’ll really like the RSC. This is my fourth year playing along with Angela, though I’m not making the sampler this year. It’s a bit addicting, so just be prepared. Your indigo blocks turned out beautifully. You have lots of lovely scraps.

So sorry about the measurements on Bullseye. That was my fault for rushing off to Costa Rica a few weeks ago and trying to get everything scheduled before I left. It turned out great though! Love the variety of your background fabrics. Glad you used scraps — that is all part of the fun!

That’s ok, it’s only a tiny amount of material and I will save the block for another project. I have a few orphan blocks from other projects, one day I will join them up to make a family. You trip looked wonderful

Welcome to the party! This is my first year too, but I managed to begin in January. I also adapted the “rules” to suit my need to use up fabric that had been around too long. I bought new yardage of a variety of white-on-white prints to use in my blocks. You have to do what you think will work best for YOU. I think you’ve made a great start, I love your blocks.

Reverse sew! I love the term. So much nicer than pick. Great blocks and the fabrics are wonderful. You’re off to such a good start. Will you go back and try some of the other blocks or just carry on from here?

I will definitely go back and make the others. I have cut pieces for some of the other colour geese already, but we have visitors from Australia so no sewing til they go – visiting castles and sleepy villages for a couple of days instead

I’ve been known to cut into my stash because I didn’t have many scraps of the month’s color. Had to play/sew along. And I needed to make blocks in each color to have a rainbow quilt.

I am enjoying it and so many lovely, friendly people as well as beautiful work. Angela has done a great job setting this QAL up. I have used some corners of my stash too to make some of the other colour geese, but it’s such a small amount, it doesn’t really make a dent in the yardage
